Demystifying Tools of Audio
Taught by Eric Myers
Let’s demystify COMPRESSORS, sculpt with EQs and move audio around on a BUS. We will focus on all 3 of these audio tools and some “psychoacoustic stuff.” Yes, there are “rules,” but we will break them if it sounds good.
Compressors:
- 2 Types: Surgical or Aesthetic
- Attack/Release Times Demystified
- Threshold & Makeup Gain Demystified
- -6dB (Then break the rules)
- Psychoacoustic Tricks of Compression: How we perceive compression and how it affects us physiologically
EQ:
- 2 Types of “Correction:” Surgical or Aesthetic
- Q, Frequency, Gain Demystified
- EQ by Subtraction: David (Michelangelo)
- -6dB (Then break the rules)
- Key Frequencies Cheat Code
BUS:
- DCA(VCA) vs Groups: The differences and benefits/limitations of each
- Why is it Called a Bus?
- When to Use a DCA (you only have 10 fingers)
- When to Use a Group or Aux Bus
Mix is a Verb:
- Logarithmic Faders
- Keep Your Head Up
- Walk Around
- Thick Skin, but Be Teachable (Jack Puig TS10 story)
- Sugar Pill Fader
- Know the Client; Know the Culture. It’s not YOUR mix.
