Derek BjellandAudio Video Technician and Assistant Audio Engineer for Stonebrook Community Church
Derek has been working with audio and video technology and production for 25.5 years, most of it within the church and house of worship environment. Currently he is an assistant audio engineer at Stonebrook Community church and is also responsible for repairing all of the audio cables for the church on an as-needed basis. Derek also spent 3 years working as a stage hand for the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
His primary focus during his employment was audio production. In the last 2-3 years, he has learned how to make custom cables and build front of house mixing systems using custom made panels and cable for audio.
Derek has a bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies/Electronic Media from the University of Northern Iowa and a Master’s of Education from Iowa State University in Curriculum and Instructional Technology.
Don’t Throw That Broken Cable Away! It Can Be Fixed: Repair and Creation of Commonly Used Cables
This session will demonstrate how to make and repair various types of digital and analog cables that might be used in house of worship settings, including multiple types of audio cables and also digital and network cables. Watch Derek Bjelland prepare a cable and solder connectors to ensure a quality connection when the cable is used. You will also watch him repair different types of damage to cables, both in the middle of a cord and also repair and replace various types of ends.
The class will cover the necessary tools and products to repair cables as well as safety and techniques to ensure a safe repair environment. You will also learn how to diagnose issues with cables that you might not be able to see with the naked eye.
If participants want to bring one or two cables from their home church that are not working, Derek would be happy to walk them through the diagnosis and repair process for their cables.
