Even with recent technological advancements, our ear/brain system remains the most complex and powerful mixing tool we have—but it must be developed. This session will focus on listening skills and ear training in the role of FOH mixing in worship environments and discuss techniques and ideas for critical listening development. We’ll audition several music samples for exercise and discussion.
This session focuses on live mixers, but is equally valuable to worship leaders and musicians. Questions are welcome.
– How do I know by listening whether compression, equalization, or other processing is needed or should be removed?
– Encourage development of deeper listening skills through practice and ear training
– Practice listening live in context (artistically, musically) while simultaneously listening to extreme detail (technically, scientifically), and make proper mix decisions on the fly.
– Discuss workflows for preparing to mix by developing target sounds through rehearsal, virtual sound checking, and even casual listening.
